Needlefish Gar: Is There Any Difference?

needlefish gar

Most people think that needlefish is different from gar. But, garfish is another name given to a needle fish.
The other names of a garfish are garpike, sea needle and Belone belone.
These fishes are edible but, the eggs of garfish / needlefish are highly toxic and shouldn’t be consumed.
One important distinction I want to point out.
Garfish is not the same as gar. Gar is a type of alligator which people sometimes relate it to garfish because it looks like it.
But, garfish is quite small when comparing to gar.
Gar is large and more powerful then needle or gar fish.

Why People Combine Needlefish With Gar?

Well, the reason behind is that it does look like a small form of it.
Needle fish mouth is slim and sharp and has many teeth’s inside. They are of silver color.
While, the gar is quite different. It has a dark silver color usually and light silver sometimes and has a lengthy mouth with many teeth’s but, the mouth is not slim from both the axis rather it’s slim in height and stretched in width.
It can be compared to the mouth of an alligator but much slimmer in height.
Also, because the gar at the back looks very similar to the needlefish and that’s another reason why people usually combine gar with needlefish.
In my opinion the gar does look like a combination of an alligator and needle fish.

Needlefish Gar – Can You Consume It?

Needlefish gar can be consumed but avoid its eggs because they are poisonous.
Garfish or needlefish is also a very good source of high quality proteins and vitamins such as vitamin B, vitamin D and contains other important minerals like calcium, phosphorus, iodine and potassium.
Other benefits are:

  • Reduce cardiovascular risk
  • Improves blood flow
  • Strengthen bones
  • Nourish hairs
  • Moisturize skin

What You Need To Know About The Differences Of Gar And Garfish?

Please note, many people normally fisherman’s interchangeably say gar and garfish when they mean the other so in that case ask them which type are they talking about?
Is it an alligator gar or a needlefish gar because people say “gar” to mean alligator gar and the same for needlefish gar as well.
So making a distinction is really important.
Both are different species and in fact, gar is a large reptile while the needlefish is a gill-bearing aquatic craniate animal.

When to Consume a Needlefish Gar?

The right time to consume a needlefish gar is in the morning or evening.
Most people prefer evening because even if it takes time to fry or boil they have enough energy from the morning breakfast so they can wait.
Because in the morning when you deep fry it, it might take some time and people are busy and want to go to office, children’s want to go to school, working women’s are busy as well and have to go on the job too so evening is the best time to have a needlefish / garfish at your table.
You can also consume it at night the problem is needlefish is hard to digest and takes time to be digested fully. So it’s always preferable in the evening times.

Why to Catch a Needlefish Gar?

Catching a needlefish gar is an art. They are quite fast and move rapidly from one point to another.
When you throw a lure in the water make sure you’re mentally prepared to catch one.

As a fisherman you should always focus on the fishes which are of rare type or the ones which other fisherman’s can’t catch that easy.
And garfish is one of them. Well in some parts of the world. But, in a few countries they are in abundant.
