Technically, needlefish are not really dangerous and don’t wound you but, if you happen to be on their way you can get a few bites here and there or even worse they can kill you. That’s rare though so don’t worry.
2 human deaths have been caused by needlefish before the starting year of 2016. We don’t have enough data after that and till now.

Needlefish wound looks like that you’ve been bitten by a lot of fishes and all at once. The wound does not look like in a distributed form, instead they look like that someone pasted a caterpillar on your wound.

It depends from which type of needlefish you got hurt from. There are various types.
Some are small, some are big in size. For example, the Atlanticneedlefish are quite small in size in comparison to crocodile needlefish (Houndfish) which are quite heavy and big in size and aggressive as well.
The smaller needlefish like Atlantic aren’t that aggressive because of the fact they are small.
Because of the tiny teeth’s of the needlefish you’ll get a tiny blood drippings from the each teeth wound and in terms of pain they are very much hard to tolerate.

Why Needlefish Attack Humans?

Well, there aren’t many reports regarding this but one common reason among other fish species as well is that you unknowingly hurting their lifestyle.
For example if they are swimming in flock and if you get in their way they can act just like piranha especially when they are of a crocodile type.

How To Treat Needlefish Wound?

Your first step is to remove all the dirt and debris which may be residing inside the wound.
That’s an important and a very necessary step to take as it prevents the bacteria to further worsen your condition.
Treating can take a bit of time and you might have to bed rest depending on how severe the wound is.
If you’ve got a long line of stitches then you should wait for attest 14 days for the stitches to completely dissolve and until you feel better. The stitches might get dissolved in just a week but, it’s better you rest for a few more days to make sure your internal tissues are up and running and healthy again.

Needle fish sleep at any time of the day or night. There is no specific set time for them to rest. They are also on an individual level and the feel of need for sleeping to them.
They sleep with their eyes open because they don’t have eyelids to cover.
This means even if they are sleeping they might become active when they see you coming.
Fisherman’s are the only humans (majority of the times) that got attack and get wounds from the needlefish.
And because they work mostly in the daytime so we can say that you might got safe from these attacks at night if you’re just crossing a river for some reason.

Can A Needlefish Jump Out Of Water and Wound You?

That’s very rare. But, can happen.
They are pretty fast in reaction but, most of the times they don’t act like dolphins which usually get out of the water and make dives.
This is not something needlefish do.
But, that’s how they can attack you if you’re underwater:

And these are the ones which attack most of the times.

Needlefish Wound Blood Drops

If you are underwater and ever got attacked by a needlefish make sure you have the necessary tools to help you along the way.
Things like bandage of different types. For example if you’ve or someone from your family got bitten by a needlefish on hand you should have a blood bandage which is a thin white cloth to cover the hand multiple times.
If the needlefish attacked the belly then obviously you can’t really cover it with the thin piece of bandage clothing. Instead, for this scenario medical stores have a special type of bandage known as a “belly bandage” which you can easily put on the belly to stop the blood coming out.
Icebox is also an awesome tool to have because it helps stop the bleeding.

Which Parts Of The Body Needlefish Mostly Attack?

Most of the times needlefish attack hands, chest and belly. So these are the areas you have to secure when you think you’re traveling and you think you might come in the way of needlefish.
If you’re swimming in an area known to be the home for needlefish make sure you cover your hands well, your chest and your belly to stay safe from these attacks.
But, keep in mind these are just those areas that are reported to be attacked by the needlefish.
This doesn’t mean you can reveal the other parts to needlefish and hope that they don’t attack them.
Always, cover your body fully when you’ve a feeling that something might go wrong.

How Much The Total Wound Surgery Cost?

Needlefish wound surgery is not really costly because you’re not renting the hospital space for days instead, you’re just renting the hospital room for a first couple of hours or 24 hours at max.
The rest of the resting days will be at your home and that should be.
The 24 hour stay at the hospital cost around $400 to $800. All depends on the services and environment they’ll offer.
You don’t have to stay one day at all. It just depends on your condition.
But assuming if you stay at the hospital for 1 day then the total cost will be as follows:
·         Hospital room renting: $400 - $800
·         Belly and blood band: $15 - $25
·         Miscellaneous: $20 - $50
·         Stitching cost: $200 - $1000
·         Total cost will be around: $635 - $1875

This cost is for the people who don’t have medical insurance. If you’ve insurance then the cost will be low.
If you remove the cost of the hospital stay then it would be around $235 to $1075.
